“Grandfather who patched up” whispers the wind through the ancient bricks of the Boboyi Poraduz Mausoleum. This isn’t just any tomb in Bukhara. It’s the final resting place of a revered figure. A master craftsman. A sheikh. Boboyi Poraduz.

Boboyi Poraduz lived a long life. He was born in Bukhara in 842 and died in 925. That’s 83 years of stitching and shoemaking. His skills were legendary. His wisdom profound. He wasn’t just a craftsman. He was a spiritual leader too. The patron saint of tailors shoemakers and all those who work with needles.

Legend speaks of a pilgrim bound for Mecca. He sought sturdy shoes for his journey. Boboyi Poraduz crafted them from watermelon rind. The pilgrim doubted their strength. Boboyi Poraduz assured him of their durability. Years later the pilgrim returned. His shoes unchanged. The tale of Boboyi Poraduz spread far and wide. Craftsmen hailed him as their pir their leader.

Another legend claims the ashes from Boboyi Poraduz’s mazar heal wounds instantly. Even in the 20th century travelers dismounted their horses and removed their hats in reverence. Every few years craftsmen gathered at the mazar. They shared meals and celebrated Navruz. Women had special festivities during the spring festival.

The Boboyi Poraduz Mausoleum itself is a testament to Central Asian architecture. Built of brick wood stone and ganch it stands as a tribute to its namesake. A single room yet it feels expansive. The sagana the monument over the grave occupies most of the eastern side. The floor is a mosaic of whole bricks and fragments. Two domes crown the structure. Marble lines the interior. Seats offer respite for pilgrims.

This mausoleum is special. Unlike others in Bukhara it wasn’t built for royalty or clergy. It’s a monument to a craftsman. A testament to skill devotion and faith.
