Envision this: a vast, verdant expanse within Hamburg’s city limits. This is the Boberger Niederung. It is a testament to nature’s resilience and Hamburg’s commitment to preserving its green spaces.

The Boberger Niederung is not just any park. It’s a 350-hectare nature reserve. Officially established in 1991, it safeguards a unique blend of landscapes. The Boberger Niederung includes dunes, moors, heaths, and marshes.

Imagine, if you will, that you are surprised to find Europe’s largest inner-city sandbox in Hamburg. That’s right. The Boberger Niederung holds the city’s last remaining wandering dune. This dune stretches one kilometer in length and 450 meters in width. It is a relic of a dune system. It once extended 15 kilometers to the eastern edge of Hamburg.

But the Boberger Niederung is more than just a sand dune. It is a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Moor frogs, amphibians, and birds thrive here. Erlenzeisige, Pirole, and Beutelmeisen nest in the wooded areas. The Boberger Niederung even boasts a significant population of nightingales.

The landscape here is shaped by both natural forces and human intervention. In the Middle Ages, people farmed the dunes. Later, in the 19th and 20th centuries, sand extraction decimated the dune landscape. This sand was used for brickmaking and railway construction.

If it is your first time visiting the Boberger Niederung, start at the Boberger Dünenhaus. This small information center is a project of the Loki Schmidt Foundation. It is named after Helmut Schmidt’s wife. The exhibition here details the history of the Boberger Niederung. It also highlights its flora and fauna.

From the Dünenhaus, follow the marked trails. A seven-kilometer circular route will lead you past horse paddocks. It continues with a small climb to the dune landscape. Observe the markings and stick to the designated paths.

As you explore, take a detour to the Boberger See. This former gravel pit has transformed into a natural water reservoir. Dense vegetation surrounds it. Small sandy beaches beckon on warm days.

Continuing around the lake, you’ll pass the Achtermoor. This former peat extraction area has become a forest. It’s a dense mix of alder and willow trees. Listen for the sounds of the Segelflugplatz Boberg. Here, gliders take to the skies on weekends. You can even take a flight.

After the airfield, you’ll reach the northern edge of the Boberger Dünen. The Hof Neun Linden is a short walk from here. This café and farm shop offer refreshments. Enjoy coffee and cake. The Galloway cattle graze peacefully in the pasture.

The Boberger Niederung is a reminder that nature and city can coexist. It is a place to wander and discover. It is a place to breathe and appreciate Hamburg’s natural side.
