Imagine a colossal iron structure spanning the Schuylkill River. This is the B&O Railroad Bridge a testament to engineering prowess. Built in 1910 it replaced an earlier bridge from the 1880s. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad constructed it after losing a fight for access to Philadelphia’s main rail lines. The original bridge a four-span iron through truss design with a center swing span opened in 1886. The new B&O Railroad Bridge also boasts a swing span allowing boats to pass. Its construction involved the American Bridge Company. A tugboat even grounded during construction needing a B&O locomotive for rescue. The B&O Railroad Bridge wasn’t immune to accidents. In 1924 the tugboat Radnor struck it carrying a barge loaded with oleum. The bridge’s operational systems also evolved. Initially protected by a mechanical interlocking system it was upgraded to electrical interlocking in 1946. This controlled the nearby Reading Company junction at Eastwick. Decades later extensive rehabilitation was needed. The Chessie System owner at the time conducted engineering studies. The project however faced delays. Finally in 2003 CSX Transportation spearheaded the renovation. This involved meticulous work on the miter rails. The rails connect and disconnect when the bridge opens and closes. The rehabilitation’s success required coordination. Contractors CSX and the US Coast Guard worked together seamlessly. The project finished on time in May 2004. The B&O Railroad Bridge stands as a silent observer of Philadelphia’s history. A symbol of resilience innovation and a crucial link in the city’s rail network.
