Can you believe that this massive complex, the Bnai Zion Medical Center, started as just a small stone building on the waterfront? It was the first Jewish-founded district hospital in Haifa, back in 1922, serving the needs of the growing local Jewish community. The hospital was originally called Hadassah Hospital and it secretly cared for illegal immigrants and underground fighters. It was in 1930 that the Jewish community became a managerial partner, leading to the transformation of the institution into the Hadassah Municipal Hospital. From then on, the hospital’s story is dotted with pivotal donations, expansion phases, and a continuous commitment to medical excellence. Over time, Bnai Zion expanded its facilities and services to become a leading healthcare institution in the region.
The hospital was able to secure a large donation from Baroness Ada de Rothschild, who also provided the land for the current building. The new building was erected in 1934 and housed 85 beds, 3 wards and one laboratory. The hospital faces the challenging task of meeting the needs of a rapidly growing local community, prompting calls for government financial participation.
Today, Bnai Zion stands as a symbol of medical excellence, providing medical care during periods of peace and conflict. The hospital is well equipped to handle any type of medical emergency. It has been designated as an official military hospital by the Israeli government, and it even has its own War-Fortified Emergency Room & Hospital Complex, capable of withstanding any acts of war and/or natural disasters. This complex is also home to the only Soldier Rehabilitation Department & new War-Fortified Underground Hospitalization Complex in northern Israel.
Bnai Zion Medical Center fully embraces the concept of coexistence by employing and treating doctors and patients of all backgrounds, including Jews, Christians, Druze, Baha’is, and Muslims. It is considered the #1 medium-sized hospital in Israel for patient satisfaction. It is no wonder it’s a pillar of the community – a testament to the enduring power of medical innovation and compassion.
