“The most beautiful building in Bucharest” they called it. That’s what architect Ion Mincu told his students. This is the National Bank of Romania Palace. Right here before you stands a testament to Romania’s economic growth and architectural ambition.

Built at the end of the 19th century this magnificent building was the first important banking structure in Bucharest. Its construction marked a turning point. It showcased the city’s burgeoning wealth and its embrace of European styles. The design reflects not only the bank’s significance but also the era’s economic prosperity and openness to European culture.

The building’s impressive facade faces Lipscani Street. Construction took six years longer than initially planned. The Serbian-Bulgarian War of 1885 disrupted the supply of Rusciuk stone. Organizational challenges further added to the delays. Think of the sheer scale of the project the interruptions and the meticulous effort involved.

Designed initially by Joseph Cassien-Bernard and Albert Galleron this architectural masterpiece draws heavily from French Classicism. Note the six sculptures adorning the facade. They represent Justice Agriculture Trade and Industry. They symbolize the National Bank’s commitment to supporting Romania’s economy. Romanian architects Grigore Cerchez and Constantin Baicoianu completed the work.

Inside the Hall of Counters is a must-see. The BNR Museum now resides here. Look closely at the coats of arms. They represent the provinces of the Romanian Kingdom at the time of the palace’s construction. Moldova Muntenia Oltenia and Dobrogea are all represented.

The Gallery of the Governors also holds historical importance. Portraits of 25 governors and two portraits of Eugeniu Carada the founder of BNR are displayed. The Council of Administration Hall is a showstopper. Its eclectic style showcases powerful baroque accents. The opulence and detail are simply remarkable.

During World War I the National Bank played a crucial role. It provided loans to finance the war effort. Despite having private capital it held the state-granted privilege of issuance. These loans were vital in supporting the Romanian government. The bank also engaged in extensive charitable projects. It helped refugees from Transylvania and funded the Hospital No. 113. Almost two-thirds of the bank’s staff served in the war.

The Great Union of 1918 led to significant changes. Monetary unification followed. The leu replaced currencies from the newly united territories. The National Bank expanded its branch network throughout Great Romania. This palace this very building was at the center of all these transformations.

The National Bank’s growth eventually led to the expansion of the original palace. New buildings were added. More space was required. The interior underwent numerous changes to accommodate the bank’s expanded operations.

This building is more than just stone and mortar. It’s a living breathing part of Romania’s history. It whispers tales of war and peace of financial prowess and charitable endeavors. It’s a symbol of national pride and a testament to the endurance of the Romanian people. It’s an unforgettable experience for all who visit. Let this magnificent palace continue to impress you.
