“Kaaf mer ebbes ab” These words echo through time. They are the legacy of Blumepeter a Mannheim local legend. Before you stands the bronze statue of this unforgettable figure.

Blumepeter whose real name was Peter Schäfer was a small man. He sold flowers in Mannheim’s squares. He had a difficult life marked by illness. He suffered from cretinism a condition affecting his growth intelligence and physical development. He never attended school. He struggled to find work.

He became a familiar sight. He wandered through Mannheim’s taverns and streets. His simple phrase “Kaaf mer ebbes ab” meaning “Buy something from me” became his trademark. People knew him as Blumepeter the flower man. He was a peculiar character a local original. He was often the target of jokes yet also a sort of mascot. His life however wasn’t all jokes. As his mental state declined his behavior became erratic. He even showed signs of aggression.

In 1919 he was committed to an institution in Weinheim. Later he was transferred to a psychiatric clinic in Wiesloch. He died there in 1940. The exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. His death fell between two transports as part of the Nazi Aktion T4 euthanasia program. Whether he was a victim of this program or died of natural causes is unknown.

Despite his hardships Blumepeter’s legacy lives on. This statue is a testament to that. It was created by the sculptor Gerd Dehof. It was erected in 1967 initially in a different location. It was later moved to its current spot on the Kapuzinerplanken. The Blumepeterfest a yearly festival is also held in his honor. The event includes a raffle and food sales to raise money for charity. The Mannheimer Bloomaulorden a prestigious civic award is given annually in his memory. Blumepeter’s image bent over with his legs splayed is used to symbolize Mannheim’s unique spirit. This is a fun-loving but also slightly rebellious character.

The Blumepeter statue before you is more than just a bronze figure. It’s a symbol of a man who despite his struggles left an indelible mark on Mannheim. It is a symbol of inclusivity and remembering those whose lives may be less visible in history. It is a reminder that even those living on the fringes can make a unique impact. Look closely at the detail. Notice the gentle curve of his back. The slight upward tilt of his head. Think of the words “Kaaf mer ebbes ab”. Hear them whisper through the Mannheim air a lasting tribute to Blumepeter.
