Have you ever wondered what a tropical Eden looks like? Here at the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum in Roatán, you don’t have to wonder. You can experience it. Founded in 1998 as Blue Harbour Plantation by Val and Jana Eylands, this 118-acre paradise was originally a hydroponic farm. The Eylands, driven by a vision of sustainable agriculture, developed a system to grow high-quality lettuce and herbs year-round. By 2004, Blue Harbor produce graced every upscale restaurant and market on Roatán. Kenn George acquired the farm in 2009 and, recognizing its potential, transformed it into the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum. He envisioned an eco-friendly haven, a place where the island’s natural beauty could be showcased. The hydroponic greenhouses still operate. They stand as a testament to the arboretum’s commitment to sustainable practices. At the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum, you’ll encounter a vibrant tapestry of flora and fauna. Wander through orchards bursting with tropical fruits. Marvel at over 400 mature cashew trees, laden with nuts. Admire the colorful heliconias and ginger flowers. The arboretum also houses a unique conservatory, a testament to human ingenuity. Built to withstand 130 mph winds, it shelters a diverse collection of plants, including orchids displayed on trees and vines. A 12-foot waterfall, crafted from local rock, adds to the conservatory’s tranquil ambiance. A large, man-made lagoon, teeming with turtles, shrimp, and various water birds, enhances the arboretum’s biodiversity. The Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum is more than just a beautiful place. It’s a living embodiment of the motto “Planting the Future”. It’s a place where education, research, and recreation intertwine seamlessly. Whether you’re a seasoned botanist or simply a nature enthusiast, the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum offers something for everyone. It’s a place where you can relax amidst nature’s splendor and reconnect with the beauty of the tropical world.
