“Five and a half million euros That’s how much the Blockhausbrücke cost to rebuild” The Blockhausbrücke in Görlitz stands before you a testament to engineering and perseverance. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a vital artery of Görlitz’s infrastructure a lifeline connecting communities for over a century. Originally built in 1870 the Blockhausbrücke fell into disrepair. By 2011 it was so bad a weight limit had to be imposed. Repair was impossible. A complete rebuild was the only option.

Discussions with Deutsche Bahn began in 2012. The planning process took years. Agreements were signed. Designs were drafted. Finally in 2021 construction began. The project wasn’t just about replacing a bridge. It involved expanding the road. The roadway itself was raised by about a meter. Why? To allow for the electrification of the railway line between the Polish and German rail networks. This was a crucial step in modernizing the region’s transportation systems. This wasn’t easy. The construction caused major traffic disruptions. Pedestrians faced long detours. A temporary bridge was built to alleviate the problem. This temporary bridge now has a new home in Görlitz’s Kidrontal.

The new Blockhausbrücke isn’t just functional. It’s aesthetically pleasing. The roadway is 8.55 meters wide including bike lanes. Sidewalks are 2.5 meters wide each. The bridge itself is 158 meters long. The project included improvements to the surrounding areas. Sections of Blockhausstraße were also upgraded. Special attention was paid to the sidewalks near the senior residence and the Blockhaus itself. These were restored to their original height. Retaining walls were built to separate the sidewalks from the raised roadway. South of the bridge lies the Friedenshöhe park. Access is now easier than ever with stairs a ramp and a wheelchair-accessible path.

The Blockhausbrücke’s reopening was a major event. It was a celebration not only of engineering but also of community resilience. The project was a collaborative effort. The city of Görlitz Deutsche Bahn Stadtwerke Görlitz AG and the Free State of Saxony all contributed financially. The total cost was around 5.56 million euros. The city is deeply grateful for the involvement of all parties involved. Their combined efforts have resulted in an improved infrastructure for Görlitz and its citizens. The Blockhausbrücke stands as a powerful symbol of progress and renewal. It’s a bridge connecting the past present and future of Görlitz. A bridge worth celebrating.
