Have you ever stood before a structure that whispers tales of royal love and intrigue? This is the Blockhaus Nikolskoe, a sturdy wooden building that evokes the spirit of Tsarist Russia. It stands as a testament to the enduring bond between King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia and his daughter Charlotte, who married Tsar Nicholas I of Russia.

The King had a vision of building a structure reminiscent of Charlotte’s childhood home, a “Russian House”. He commissioned the gifted architect Carlo Rossi to create a design. The Blockhaus Nikolskoe, unlike its more elegant counterparts, was built with thick, rounded logs for sturdiness. It served a practical purpose: on the lower level, two sailors lived, managing the ferry service to the nearby Pfaueninsel. Above, lived the King’s coachman and the caretaker of Nikolskoe, Iwan Bockow.

The Blockhaus Nikolskoe was, however, more than just a residence. The King envisioned it as a “tea room”, a cozy retreat for him and his family. Bockow, true to his Russian heritage, became quite the entrepreneur, defying the King’s no-alcohol rule. He offered “beleckten” (sweet) and “unbeleckten” (not sweet) breads, creating a lively haven for hungry visitors.

The Blockhaus Nikolskoe faced a grim fate in 1984. It was destroyed in a fire, claiming one life. Fortunately, the structure was rebuilt faithfully, restoring its charm and inviting visitors to step into its history. Today, we stand before this remarkable building, a symbol of cross-cultural affection, a place where we can imagine the King and his daughter enjoying tea in this “Russian House”.
