Nestled in the Soundview section of the Bronx, Blessed Sacrament Church has a story to tell. A story of faith, education, and a touch of judicial history. Blessed Sacrament Church wasn’t always its own entity. It began as an offshoot of Holy Family Parish, established in 1927 to serve the growing Catholic community. The cornerstone of the combined church and school building was laid in 1928. Just a year later, in 1929, Cardinal Hayes dedicated the newly completed Gothic Revival style Blessed Sacrament Church. The church building itself is a fascinating structure. The church occupies the ground floor, with school classrooms housed above. This combined structure reflects a common practice in New York City parochial schools of that era. A second, brick schoolhouse was later added to the Blessed Sacrament Church complex in 1955. This expansion speaks to the growing needs of the community and the church’s commitment to education. Blessed Sacrament Church’s school holds a special place in history. A young Sonia Sotomayor, who would later become a Supreme Court Justice, attended this very school from kindergarten through eighth grade, graduating at the top of her class in 1968. Imagine young Sonia walking these halls, developing the intellect and determination that would shape her future. In 2015, Blessed Sacrament Church came full circle. The parish merged back with Holy Family, its parent parish. Despite this merger, the legacy of Blessed Sacrament Church continues to resonate within the community, a testament to its history and its impact on the lives of so many.
