“A ‘Cheerful Ascetic’? That sounds like quite the contradiction!” someone in the crowd murmurs. You might be surprised too, but here at the Blessed Francis Seelos Catholic Church, that’s exactly what they call the man who once walked these grounds. Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos might not be a household name, but his story, like his life, is one of remarkable dedication and quiet heroism. Born in Germany in 1819, Seelos felt the call to priesthood early on. He journeyed to America as a Redemptorist missionary in 1843, a testament to his commitment to serving those in need. Seelos served in various parishes alongside another soon-to-be saint, St. John Neumann. He was known for his tireless dedication to his parishioners, particularly the sick and impoverished. His work ethic and unwavering faith earned him the moniker, ‘The Cheerful Ascetic.’ In 1866, Blessed Francis Seelos was assigned to St. Mary of the Assumption Church, right here in New Orleans. A yellow fever epidemic ravaged the city at that time, and true to his nature, Seelos selflessly served the afflicted. Sadly, he contracted the disease himself and died in 1867 at just 48 years old. His legacy of compassion and service, however, continues to inspire. The Blessed Francis Seelos Catholic Church stands as a testament to his life and work. Even today, people travel from far and wide seeking his intercession for healing. The church houses a museum dedicated to his life and holds his tomb, a site of pilgrimage for the faithful.
