Did Blasberg always catch the salty breezes of the Flensburg Fjord? Here on Blasberg street, amidst these charming houses and small businesses, it’s easy to feel connected to the past. Blasberg, a small, historic district within Flensburg, wasn’t always part of the city. In fact, it was incorporated at the beginning of the 20th century. Its name, meaning “windy hill,” hints at its exposed location. While the exact hill referred to is unclear, the higher elevations around Blasberg, including where the Mürwik Water Tower stands, offer sweeping views of the Flensburg Fjord. It’s easy to imagine the wind whipping through the trees and across the rooftops. Blasberg’s story began as a humble “Katensiedlung,” a settlement of small cottages. The earliest record of Blasberg dates back to 1759. By 1825, it consisted of ten cottages. Half belonged to the Flensburg Amt, while the rest were owned by the hospital or monastery. Interestingly, the original village road from Blasberg led down to the nearby Kielseng on the fjord, not into Flensburg proper. Blasberg’s cottages weren’t just homes. Number 1, a plastered, single-story house with a gable roof, still bears the inscription “AD 1848.” Right next door, at number 3, a larger building housed a tavern in the late 19th century. Today, it’s easy to see the remnants of that era. Even a casual stroll reveals the mix of residential and commercial buildings that still define Blasberg today. In 1900, Blasberg became part of Flensburg. Then a part of Jürgensgaard, it later became part of Fruerlund district. In 1921, the street itself officially received the name Blasberg. That same year, this seemingly quiet area played host to a significant event. The Danish minority held their first annual meeting here. This gathering was a powerful demonstration of their connection to Denmark. In the aftermath of World War II, Blasberg served as a refuge. The Blasberg-West camp, comprised of wooden and stone barracks, housed displaced people. Yet, even during this period of upheaval, the unique character of Blasberg remained. The vast expanse of Volkspark, established in 1925, was preserved, providing a green heart to the community. Blasberg today remains a blend of old and new. The original cottages stand alongside more modern buildings, and even a Sky supermarket sits on the edge of the Volkspark stadium. Businesses like the “Kiosk Blasberg” and “Blasberg-Apotheke” proudly carry the district’s name. So, as you stand here on Blasberg, remember, you’re not just on a street.
