Black Rock Beach isn’t just sand and surf. It’s a place steeped in history. Two small islands called the Black Rocks guard the coast. A cottage sits on one a testament to enduring human presence. The beach itself stretches southward from Boston Harbor bordering both Hull and Cohasset. It separates the ocean from Straits Pond a tidal pond emptying into the Weir River in Hingham.
For a time Black Rock Beach hosted a grand summer resort the Black Rock House. Built in the 1880s it thrived until its demolition in the 1960s. A rusty ringbolt near Jerusalem Road is all that remains a silent reminder of horses tethered there long ago. An earlier Black Rock House existed as early as 1757. Initially a family home it later became an inn for duck hunters before being expanded significantly in the 19th century. By 1903 its size annoyed neighbors who bought the original structure. They moved part of it to Atlantic Avenue in Hull and demolished the rest. A new Black Rock House opened in 1909. Boasting sixty guest rooms towers turrets and balconies it drew visitors from across the globe. Families returned annually staying for weeks. Its final owner sold it in 1926. By the 1950s only the bar remained in use. The hotel was finally razed in 1968.
Legend speaks of an inlet once connecting the Weir River to the Atlantic via Straits Pond. Most historical maps contradict this. Storms have occasionally breached the seawall flooding Straits Pond. One such event occurred during the infamous winter storm of January 30 1933.
Today Black Rock Beach offers stunning views. Minot Light stands as a distant sentinel. The rocks themselves are covered in seaweed. The rhythmic crashing of the waves provides a natural soundtrack. Keep an eye out for lobster traps sometimes tossed ashore by rough seas.
