“Amat Kwanyil.” Ever heard that name? It is what the Kumeyaay people called Black Mountain long before European settlers arrived. Today, we call it Black Mountain Open Space Park.

Black Mountain rises 1,554 feet above San Diego. It offers amazing 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see the ocean, mountains, and even downtown San Diego. The park itself spans 2,352 acres. It’s a space full of chaparral-covered hills and canyons.

Did you know that Black Mountain is an extinct volcano? It last erupted 118 to 125 million years ago. Black Mountain is part of the Santiago Peak Volcanics. These volcanoes began as a chain of volcanic islands around 150 million years ago.

The park has many native plants. Chaparral grows on the east and north sides. You will find manzanita, laurel sumac, and California lilac there. Coastal sage scrub thrives on the south and west sides. Look for California white sage, California sagebrush, and California buckwheat.

Black Mountain is also home to many animals. Mule deer, bobcats, and kangaroo rats live here. Birdwatchers can spot over 80 species. Keep an eye out for rare birds like the California gnatcatcher. Reptiles include the red diamond rattlesnake. You might also see Pacific chorus frogs.

Hikers and bikers love Black Mountain. There are trails for all skill levels. Popular trails include Lusardi Creek Loop Trail and East Rim Trail. The Nighthawk Trail is accessible from Hilltop Community Park. Be aware that a hiker tragically died on Nighthawk Trail in June 2024.

There’s an abandoned arsenic mine hidden in Black Mountain canyon. You can reach it via Miner’s Ridge Loop Trail. Frank Hopkins, an Escondido rancher and rodeo cowboy, opened the mine in the 1920s. He wanted to meet the demand for white arsenic. Farmers needed it for pesticides to kill boll weevils. The mine closed in 1927 when demand for arsenic dropped.

In 2016, tests found high arsenic levels near the mine. The city closed parts of Miner’s Ridge Loop Trail. Remediation was completed in 2018. All trails are now open. However, the mine site remains closed for safety.

To reach Black Mountain, take State Route 56 to Black Mountain Road. Turn onto Oviedo Street for the Nighthawk Trailhead. Continue on Black Mountain Road to Carmel Valley Road for the Miner’s Ridge Loop Trailhead.

Black Mountain offers a mix of history, nature, and recreation. From its volcanic past to its diverse wildlife, it’s a unique place. Take a hike, enjoy the views, and remember the mountain’s Kumeyaay roots.
