Have you ever wondered about a place named after its color? This is the Black Hut. It sits near North Barrule. North Barrule is the Isle of Man’s second highest peak. It stands tall in the north of the Island.

The Black Hut is more than just a name. It marks a spot. A small parking area exists here. Hikers use it to start their climb. They aim for North Barrule’s summit. The signposted footpath is just across the road.

To reach North Barrule from the east, drive the A18 Mountain Road. It’s about 25 minutes from Douglas. Ramsey is only 10 minutes away. The Black Hut serves as your starting point.

From the Black Hut, the adventure begins. First, ascend Clagh Ouyr. It’s a short climb. It should take about 20 minutes. Then, walk along the ridge. This moderate walk leads to North Barrule’s summit. Expect a walk of about 1.5 to 2 hours. The ground is grassy and sometimes marshy.

Imagine standing at the Black Hut now. The air is crisp. You can smell the grass. The path ahead invites you. Think about those who came before you.

The views from North Barrule are amazing. They easily rival those of Snaefell. On a clear day, see Ireland, Cumbria, Wales, and Scotland. Also see all parts of the Isle of Man. The central hills might block some views.

One tragic event links to North Barrule. It was the Island’s worst air disaster. On April 23, 1945, a B17G crashed here. The plane carried 31 American airmen. Charles E Ackerman captained the flight. Thick fog caused the crash. Everyone on board died. In 1995, a plaque was placed. The Manx Aviation Preservation Society honored the crew.

The Black Hut is a landmark. It’s a starting point. It’s a reminder of past events. It’s a place to begin your journey. So, stand here for a moment. Take in the air. Consider the history. Then, start your walk to North Barrule’s peak. The Black Hut remains behind you. It awaits your return.
