Imagine being transported back in time to the Old West. But this time you see it through a different lens. Welcome to the Black American West Museum. This museum preserves and shares the stories of African American men and women who shaped the American West.

Founded in 1971 by Paul W Stewart, the Black American West Museum stands as a testament to their contributions. Stewart was inspired by his own childhood experiences. He learned that Black cowboys were not just a myth, but a reality. His quest to document their stories led to this museum.

The Black American West Museum is located in the former home of Dr Justina Ford. She was Colorado’s first licensed African American female doctor. This historic house adds another layer of significance to the museum.

Dr. Ford faced prejudice because she was a woman and African American. Despite these challenges, she practiced medicine for 50 years. She delivered over 7000 babies and served a diverse community. Her legacy of service and perseverance resonates throughout the museum.

Inside the Black American West Museum, you’ll discover exhibits dedicated to various aspects of Black life in the West. The Cowboy Exhibit showcases the lives of famous and lesser-known Black cowboys. View photographs and artifacts like saddles, spurs, and chaps.

The Homestead Exhibit focuses on Deerfield, Colorado. This pioneer town was founded by OT Jackson in 1910. It represents a vision of Black self-sufficiency and community.

Don’t miss the military exhibits that highlight the Buffalo Soldiers. These brave men served with distinction in the West. Explore photographs, uniforms, weapons, and timelines.

The Black American West Museum also features a Home Hall of Education. Here, you can watch a movie starring Herbert Jeffries. He was a singing Black cowboy in the 1930s.

The museum also honors pioneers, lawmen, and homesteaders. You’ll learn about figures like Mary Fields aka Stagecoach Mary and Walter Jackson.

The Black American West Museum shares inspiring stories. It also features people like the Parker Brothers who owned a ranch in Cherry Creek. Discover the story of Cathay Williams, who disguised herself as a man to serve in the US Army. Despite her service, she was denied disability payments.

The Black American West Museum ensures these stories are never forgotten. It is a place of learning, reflection, and celebration. It is only open on Saturdays and visitors must schedule their visits. So come prepared to spend an hour or two with trailblazers.

As you leave the Black American West Museum, consider the words of Paul Stewart. He believed in the importance of telling these stories. He wanted to ensure that future generations understand the vital role of African Americans in shaping the West. The museum stands as a living tribute to their courage, resilience, and enduring legacy.
