Before us rises the Bitexco Financial Tower. It is more than just steel and glass. It’s a symbol of Vietnam’s economic transformation. Inaugurated in October 2010, this skyscraper quickly became an icon. CNN even recognized it as one of the 25 Great Skyscraper Icons of Construction.
Carlos Zapata, a Venezuelan architect based in New York City, designed the Bitexco Financial Tower. He drew inspiration from the lotus flower. The lotus is Vietnam’s national flower. It represents purity and optimism. Notice how the building’s shape subtly echoes the elegant curves of a lotus petal.
The Bitexco Financial Tower is a mixed-use project. It combines office space, retail areas, and entertainment venues. The tower boasts around 38000 square meters of office space. These span from the 7th to the 65th floors.
But the Bitexco Financial Tower isn’t just for business. Icon68 is a five-story retail podium. It offers a variety of shopping and dining experiences. A seven-screen multiplex cinema offers entertainment.
The Saigon Skydeck is on the 49th floor. It provides stunning 360-degree panoramic views of Ho Chi Minh City. For about $10 you can experience the bustling cityscape from above. It’s a perfect spot to get your bearings and appreciate the city’s vastness.
Look up to the 52nd floor. You will see the helipad. This is Vietnam’s first non-rooftop helipad. It extends 22 meters from the main structure. The helipad looks like a blossoming lotus bud. It can support a helicopter weighing up to 3 tons.
The construction of the helipad was an engineering feat. It required over 250 tons of steel. About 4000 ultra-strong bolts hold it together. Most materials were sourced from Europe and South Korea. It took almost a year to plan, build, and install.
Consider the glass panels. Each of the 6000 panels is unique. They were custom-cut in China. This gives the Bitexco Financial Tower its distinctive shape.
The Bitexco Financial Tower also features advanced vertical transportation. Otis double-deck elevators whisk you up at speeds of up to 7 meters per second. At the time of installation, it was the fastest lift system in Southeast Asia.
Since 2011 the Bitexco Financial Tower has hosted the annual HCMC Skyrun. This is Vietnam’s longest-running stair-climbing race. Participants race from the ground floor to the helipad on the 52nd floor. The record is 4 minutes 51 seconds.
