Around 1151 Bisnate first appeared. A small village its agricultural heart beat strong. This unassuming hamlet near the Adda River held a strategic position. It sat where the Milan to Crema road crossed the river. Imagine the constant flow of travelers merchants soldiers. Their footsteps echoed through Bisnate’s history.

Bisnate’s importance grew throughout the Middle Ages. Its location ensured a bustling existence. In the late 1200s the village and its church fell under Galgagnano’s parish. A quiet shift in power dynamics. The influence of larger centers shaped Bisnate’s destiny.

Under Spanish rule the County of Lodi divided into three bishoprics. Bisnate belonged to the upper bishopric. It remained there until 1751. Then it merged briefly with Folla. A temporary union before regaining its independence.

By the mid-1700s Bisnate boasted 192 inhabitants. It became independent again. It fell under the fiefdom of Paullo. Prince Michele II of Thurn und Taxis owned it. He lived far away in Vienna. He delegated a podestà in Milan and a vice-podestà in Paullo. They managed Bisnate’s affairs. A complex system of feudal governance.

The prince instituted an annual election of a mayor on January 1st. Austrian feudal rules governed the system. The mayor oversaw the community. He reported to the vice-podestà. A chancellor and two estimators assisted. Bisnate became part of Lodi’s County in 1786. Its history intertwined with larger political entities.

Bisnate became a fraction of Zelo Buonpersico during the Napoleonic era (1809-16). It briefly regained autonomy under the Lombardo-Venetian kingdom. Finally in 1841 it permanently joined Zelo Buonpersico.

Today Bisnate is a quiet place. Rural exodus left only a few dozen residents. The echoes of its past linger. The Church of Sant’Alessandro stands tall. Built in the 13th century it is a testament to Bisnate’s enduring spirit. Its history is etched in stone. Its frescoes by Vincenzo Foppa tell stories of faith and devotion. They whisper tales of a time long past. But the spirit of Bisnate remains. A village steeped in history waiting to be explored.
