Recall the year 1899. The seed for the Bismarckturm Bad Godesberg was planted. A Bismarck-Denkmal-Comitee was founded. It was their mission to honor Otto von Bismarck. Dr Brandis led the charge. Anton Dengler was also a key member.

The Wacholderhöhe became the chosen site for the Bismarckturm Bad Godesberg. The community and banker Karl von der Heydt donated the land. His villa stood nearby. Donations funded the 21000 Mark construction cost. Ernst Spindler from Berlin designed the tower. He also supervised the construction. Theodor Wilhelm Dueren’s firm in Godesberg carried out the work in 1901 and 1902.

Imagine the dedication ceremony on March 31 1902. A festive procession marched from Kurpark to the Bismarckturm Bad Godesberg. The fire was lit atop the tower. The upper platform and base needed repair work by 1908. In 1912 a steel door replaced the wooden one. A new 372 kilogram fire basket was installed.

Picture this. A planned demolition in 1952 was scrapped. The cost was too high. In 1956 access was restricted for safety. The Bismarckturm Bad Godesberg underwent restoration in 2004. The fire bowl no longer exists. Unauthorized entry is impossible.

The Bismarckturm Bad Godesberg stands 20.4 meters tall. It has an octagonal layout. Brownish-yellow sandstone forms the pillar. Basalt lava makes up the two-meter-high base. The tower covers 122 square meters. Twelve supporting walls brace the shaft at ground level.

Consider the tower’s design. Steps on the west side lead to the entrance. A stone spiral staircase inside has 60 steps. It leads to an intermediate level. A metal ladder provides access to the observation deck.

The Godesberg Bismarckturm is not the first in Bonn. The Bismarcksäule in Bonn-Gronau was finished in 1901. A wooden Bismarckturm on Venusberg was dedicated in 1894. That wooden tower was torn down in 1912. It was never rebuilt. The Godesberg Bismarckturm is on Wacholderhöhe. It is on Elisabethstraße in Alt-Godesberg.

Did you realize? The Bismarckturm Bad Godesberg is a protected monument. It was listed in 1988. The structure shows clear Jugendstil influences. Henry van de Velde’s architecture inspired it. The tower’s history is rich. It has witnessed celebrations and faced threats. Today it stands as a reminder of a bygone era. It also is a testament to Bad Godesberg’s heritage. It is a place of reflection. It is a place of memory. It is the Bismarckturm Bad Godesberg.
