Ever considered how a school could embody the spirit of an era? That’s precisely what the Bismarckschule in Hanover does. Founded in 1906, the Bismarckschule began as a Reformrealgymnasium. It focused on natural sciences for boys. The first location was in the Nordstadt district. Later, in 1911, the school moved to its current building.
Johann de Jonge, a city building official, designed the building. Its architecture showcases late Historicism. Elements of Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau are visible. The Bismarckschule stands as a testament to its time.
During World War II, the Bismarckschule served a vital role. Its basement became a public air-raid shelter. It protected people from the aerial bombings of Hanover. This offered a safe haven during the air raids.
In 1953, the Bismarckschule became a UNESCO project school. This marked its commitment to international cooperation. In 2005, it was approved as a full-time school. This broadened its educational offerings.
Today, the Bismarckschule continues to thrive. In the 2020/21 school year, 1,116 students attended. They were taught by 86 teachers and five student teachers. Classes range from grades 5 to 13.
In 2009, a new three-story building began construction. It provides ten classrooms, two group rooms, a cafeteria, and a dining hall. Stephan Weil, the Mayor, inaugurated the new building on August 18, 2010. The investment totaled around 4.75 million euros. During construction, classes were held in a container structure on the schoolyard.
The historical main building was also modernized. The city of Hanover funded the 8.25 million euro renovation. The work was completed for the school’s 100th anniversary in 2011.
The Bismarckschule has a distinct profile. It emphasizes mathematics and natural sciences. It offers specialized classes starting in the fifth grade. “Bläserklassen” or wind classes exist in grades 5 and 6. The school actively participates in the UNESCO school project. It also has a strong media profile.
In the Bläserklasse, students can learn an instrument. This program is limited to two years. Students can choose from various instruments. These include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and drums. Instruction is provided by specialized teachers.
The Bläserklasse ends after the seventh grade. Students can continue playing in a working group. They can take private lessons. Alternatively, they can stop playing altogether.
The Bismarckschule hosts several projects. Fifth graders participate in an annual Africa Week. Since 2012, the graduating class organizes a Harry Potter night for younger students. Since 2019, the graduating class has hosted a Winter Ball for ninth and tenth graders.
The Bismarckschule offers a diverse range of foreign languages. English is taught starting in the fifth grade. In sixth grade, students can choose French, Spanish, or Latin. Italian can be selected from tenth grade.
Various working groups are available. These include football, computer, hockey, and theater.
The school has its own rowing club. It offers training on the Maschsee.
The Bismarckschule even houses a planetarium. It features a Zeiss projector. The south tower contains an observatory. It includes a Zeiss telescope.
The Bismarckschule cooperates with the Tellkampfschule. This allows for a wider range of advanced courses. It also supports a partner school in Tanzania.
