Look closely at the Bismarck-Denkmal. This imposing monument isn’t just a statue. It’s a story etched in bronze and granite. A story of Essen’s industrial might and its connection to the unification of Germany.

The Bismarck-Denkmal stands tall a testament to Otto von Bismarck the Iron Chancellor. Erected between 1894 and 1899 this 3.2 meter high monument is more than just a bronze figure. The statue itself is only two meters. The remaining 1.2 meters are formed by a solid granite base. This impressive structure was the brainchild of Reinhold Felderhoff. Its unveiling on September 23 1899 marked a significant moment in Essen’s history.

Alfred Krupp a name synonymous with Essen’s industrial prowess funded the entire project. Why Krupp? Bismarck was Essen’s first honorary citizen. He championed the Krupp steel industry and mining. The monument’s placement in front of the Royal Railway Directorate wasn’t accidental. It highlighted the importance of both Bismarck and the railway to Essen’s development.

The four sides of the granite base are adorned with bronze reliefs. Each depicts pivotal moments. They weave a narrative of German unification and Essen’s role. One side shows Prussian and Bavarian soldiers shaking hands symbolizing the unification. Another shows Alfred Krupp himself presenting cannons to Bismarck. This commemorates Bismarck’s visit to Essen in 1864. Yet another shows Germania protecting the Krupp forges. These forges produced weapons for the wars of German unification. The final relief depicts Wilhelm I receiving the Kaiserkrone from a genius. Bismarck proclaims Wilhelm I as Kaiser.

The Bismarck-Denkmal survived World War II with minimal damage. However during the construction of the Ruhrschnellweg tunnel and the subway it was temporarily removed. From February 1 1968 to October 19 1970 it was carefully stored. Recently the monument underwent a major restoration. This cost around 59000 Euros. The statue was even lifted from its base for a thorough inspection. The restoration ensured that this powerful symbol of Essen’s past will continue to stand tall. It is a fitting tribute to a pivotal figure and an integral part of Essen’s identity. So look closely and let the history of this place sink into your understanding.
