It’s a tribute to Otto von Bismarck, the so-called “Iron Chancellor” who played a pivotal role in unifying Germany. Now, you might be thinking, “Another statue?” But this one, this one has a tale to tell. The Bismarck-Denkmal was completed in 1915, marking Bismarck’s 100th birthday. It’s one of the few equestrian statues among almost 500 Bismarck memorials scattered across Germany. The monument was actually intended to be part of a grand bridge project, but those plans never materialized. Instead, here stands Bismarck, cast in bronze, atop his steed, a silent sentinel reflecting a tumultuous period in German history.
