Whispers of history echo from these very stones. This is Biserica Sf Maria a Harurilor in Bucharest. More commonly known as Biserica Baratia. Its name a curious twist derived from the Hungarian word ‘barat’ meaning brother or monk. This unassuming church on Str Baratiei has witnessed centuries unfold.

Imagine Franciscan friars arriving in 1314. They built a humble wooden church. It served Italian merchants traveling to the Byzantine Empire. This was long before Bucharest even officially existed. The city itself was founded in 1459. The wooden church stood here nonetheless. Rebuilt time and again it weathered the storms of history.

By 1629-1633 Franciscan friars from the Province of Bulgaria constructed a new stone church. Prince Stefan Cantacuzino pledged to repair it in 1716. He was forced to abdicate the same year. Leopold I generously donated 1500 golden ducats for the repairs. Prince Nicholas Mavrocordatos added a further 280 ducats. The renovations concluded in 1741.

Tragedy struck during the 1847 Bucharest fire. The church burned to the ground. Its reconstruction thankfully followed. The Imperial House of Vienna provided 4000 guilders. The large bell was cast in 1855. Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria financed this addition.

The communist era brought challenges. Buildings belonging to the parish were demolished or confiscated. The church itself underwent a significant renovation in 1954. Today Biserica Baratia stands as a testament to its resilience. Masses are still celebrated here. Services are held in Romanian Hungarian and German. They reflect Bucharest’s diverse communities. This church is more than just a building. It’s a living memory of faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Bucharest. It is a silent observer of Bucharest’s continuous evolution. This church. Biserica Baratia. A legacy etched in stone.
