Did Radu Poenaru, Serdar, ever imagine his humble church would become a beloved landmark? Right here, before you stands Biserica Târca-Vitan. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and the vibrant history of Bucharest. Biserica Târca-Vitan isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in stone and paint. The church, nestled near the Dâmbovița River, was completed before July 1820. The first inscription, or pisanie, in Romanian Cyrillic, proudly marked its western facade. Radu and his wife, Natalia, were the original ktetors, the church’s founders. This Biserica Târca-Vitan was the first church on this very spot. The name “Târca,” dating back to around 1670, has a few possible origins. Some say it refers to “tărca,” meaning piebald, perhaps linked to the cattle that once grazed the swampy land here. Another theory connects it to “țarc,” meaning pen, evoking images of livestock enclosures. “Vitan” itself is linked to “vite,” meaning cattle, reminding us of the area’s pastoral past. Biserica Târca-Vitan witnessed a period of decline after its founders passed away. The church fell into ruins and was even closed in 1912, slated for demolition. But the community rallied. Funds were raised, and the Metropolis of Ungro-Wallachia offered a generous donation. By 1915, Biserica Târca-Vitan was restored to its former glory, complete with a mosaic floor and fresh paint. The original paintings on the iconostasis were also meticulously repaired. Today, as you admire Biserica Târca-Vitan, picture its cross-shaped structure, its thick brick walls, and the subtle relief of its apses. The original bell tower’s stone base still stands, though now protected by tin sheeting. A newer metal-framed structure to the northwest houses the bells now. Inside, the narthex and the beginning of the nave are crowned with a cylindrical vault. Above the nave’s center, a depressed dome rests gracefully on pendentives. The facades, divided by a simple string course, are adorned with rectangular panels, their corners softly rounded. High on the western facade, painted icons of the patron saints watch over the entrance. Originally roofed with tin, Biserica Târca-Vitan even sported Turkish tiles for a brief period in 1940. The church grounds once held a cemetery, closed in 1880, and the remnants of cell-houses built for traveling monks. Biserica Târca-Vitan stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Bucharest, a beacon of faith that has weathered storms and emerged stronger, more beautiful than ever.
