The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. This is Biserica Sfântul Prooroc Ioan Botezatorul – Chitila I. A place of quiet contemplation. A place steeped in history.
Built between 1912 and 1913 by Ion and Florea Olteanu this church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its consecration on October 27 1913 by Bishop Teofil of Ploiești marked a significant moment for the people of Chitila. The first parish priest was Constantin Teodorescu. His legacy continues to this day.
Imagine the dedication of those early parishioners. They toiled to raise this beautiful building. Their hands shaped the stones. Their prayers guided the construction. The original oil paintings from 1913 by Constantin Gheorghe are a marvel. A unique blend of Byzantine and Neoclassical styles. They showcase a rich tapestry of religious scenes. A monumental achievement.
The church wasn’t always as magnificent as it is now. Time and neglect took their toll. But thanks to the efforts of Father Alexandrescu Ion Adrian and his fellow priests Constanda Ioan and Șerban Ionuț the church underwent a major restoration in 2008. The original paintings were painstakingly cleaned and restored. A community cantina was built alongside the refurbished parish house. The work was completed in 2009. Patriarch Daniel himself officiated at the reconsecration service. A true blessing for the community.
Look closely at the architecture. The church’s cruciform shape is traditional. It features three apses. The main dome rises above the nave. Smaller domes flank the narthex. The narthex itself is supported by pillars connected by arches. Even the smallest details speak volumes about the history of this church.
The altar is flanked by the prothesis and the diaconicon. These are essential spaces for liturgical preparation and service. The enclosed narthex extends for over ten meters. It boasts its own more recent painting. This place reflects faith. This place whispers tales of devotion.
Biserica Sfântul Prooroc Ioan Botezatorul – Chitila I is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the enduring spirit of faith. It’s a gathering place for the community. It’s a beacon of hope. It’s a place where history and faith intersect. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Reflect on the stories it holds. Let its quiet dignity resonate within you.
