Thirty-six years. That’s how long it took to build the Biserica Sfântul Elefterie Nou. Imagine the dedication.

The story begins long ago. Before this grand structure. There was an island. A small island in the Dâmbovița River. On this island was an older church dedicated to Saint Eleftherius. It was a beloved spot a tranquil haven amidst the bustling city. But as Bucharest grew the river was straightened. The island disappeared. The old church became too small for its growing congregation.
In 1934 a decision was made. A new church was needed. The cornerstone of the Biserica Sfântul Elefterie Nou was laid in 1935. Construction began. But then war came. World War II stalled progress. The project was paused. Years passed. Dreams seemed to fade.
Yet the vision persisted. Finally in 1971 after thirty-six years of dedication and effort the Biserica Sfântul Elefterie Nou was completed. Patriarch Justinian Marina consecrated the church.
Look at its impressive dimensions. Thirty-six meters long and twenty-five meters wide. A monumental structure that speaks of faith’s unwavering power.
The interior is breathtaking. The catapeteasma the icon screen is a masterpiece. Carved from cherry wood it’s unique in all of Romania. Its design echoes a similar catapeteasma found in Skopje Macedonia. The icons themselves were painted by Stan Hermeneanu a renowned iconographer. He worked on many important churches in Romania. The frescoes further enhance the beauty. Iosif Keber and Vasile Rudeanu were the artists. Their neoclassical style is magnificent. Even Father Arsenie Boca contributed an icon. His icon of the Virgin Mary and Child graces the altar.
And there’s more. The Biserica Sfântul Elefterie Nou houses a portion of the relics of Saint Eleftherius. A gift from the Mănăstirea Călugărești monastery. These sacred relics were placed in the church in 2009. A truly special treasure for this special place.
