A church has existed on this site since around 1500. Imagine the echoes of history within these walls. The original structure likely met its demise after the Battle of Călugăreni in 1595. It was then resurrected, only to face destruction again and again. Earthquakes, fires, and the passage of time all took their toll on Biserica Sfântul Dumitru – Poștă. The current structure, begun in 1819 by Bishop Constantin Filitti of Buzău, stands as a testament to its tumultuous past. The church’s construction spanned decades, with contributions from successive bishops. Finally completed in 1843, it was soon tested by the Great Fire of Bucharest in 1847, which ravaged the roof and its intricate paintings. The church was restored, with reinforced walls and new artwork by Carol Szathmari. Yet, by 1912, Biserica Sfântul Dumitru – Poștă was once again in ruins, facing the threat of demolition. It was saved by Ioan C. Filitti, a descendant of the original builder, and Mayor Dimitrie Dobrescu. This cross-shaped church, with its distinctive Christ Pantocrator dome and Greek Revival ornamentation, bears the scars of its past. Inside, the realist-style paintings and Baroque iconostasis offer a glimpse into the artistic trends of different eras. Biserica Sfântul Dumitru – Poștă has witnessed countless oaths sworn near its altar, earning it the moniker “Church of Oath Taking”. The church’s nickname, Poștă, comes from its proximity to the former Post Office Palace, a reminder of its place in the heart of Bucharest.
