Wonder how a small wooden church sparked a spiritual and social revolution in this Bucharest neighborhood? Let’s delve into the story of Biserica Sfânta Vineri Pajura. This isn’t just one building. It is actually a parish complex. It consists of an old wooden church. Also, it includes a new church and a socio-cultural center named after the Holy Brâncovenian Martyrs.
In the beginning, the residents of the Pajura neighborhood were longing for a place to worship. Biserica Sfânta Vineri appeared just when it was needed most. It was blessed by renowned Romanian spiritual figures. Father Teofil Părăian himself prayed under its first altar.
The first Saint Altar ever built in the Pajura neighborhood was erected in 1999. It was a humble wooden church. It was dedicated to the Holy Venerable Parascheva of Iași and Teodora of Sihla.
Elena Vișinescu remembers its beginnings. The church seemed to be transported from the green meadows of Maramureș. Significant efforts were made to gain blessings for its construction. Father Macarie from Pasărea Monastery and Fathers Ilie Cleopa and Ioanichie Bălan from Sihăstria Monastery supported it. Also Father Ilarion Argatu from Cernica Monastery and Father Paulin Leca from Arnota Monastery blessed it.
Interestingly, in 1999, there weren’t enough funds to buy the wood. Father Ilinoiu prayed to Saint Hierarch Nicholas. While reading the acathist, a man appeared and asked if they needed money. He had just returned from America. He decided to contribute after hearing about the planned construction of the Cathedral of the Nation’s Salvation. Seeing the small wooden church, he realized the money was needed there more urgently. So, through divine intervention and a donation, the wood was paid for.
Over time, Biserica Sfânta Vineri grew too small. From its roots sprouted a new, large, and beautiful church. It was dedicated to the Holy Brâncovenian Martyrs. It was built between 2006 and 2014 with support from the Sector 1 Municipality. The consecration took place on October 14, 2014. Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church officiated.
Today, Biserica Sfânta Vineri Pajura offers more than just religious services. The socio-cultural establishment provides family medicine. Also, it conducts catechism and cultural activities for the young. It harmoniously combines the spiritual with the social. The medical offices offer services to insured individuals. They also provide free medical care to those who have lost their insurance. The titular physician is a primary care physician specializing in family medicine and general ultrasonography.
The parish also provides free tutoring in various subjects. They offer painting, modeling, and Romanian traditional art workshops. Also, the parish possesses an important book collection. Not to mention the beautiful orthodox chants during the religious services.
