Could a church rise from the ashes of two others? Here, before you stands Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae Vlădica”. It’s a testament to just such a rebirth. This Romanian Orthodox church, nestled at the foot of Metropolitan Hill, has a fascinating story to tell. Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae Vlădica” wasn’t the first sacred structure on this spot. The original Church of Saint Nicholas of Prund and another church, both sharing the name Saint Nicholas, stood here before it. By the late 19th century, both had fallen into disrepair. Rather than restore two decaying buildings, a decision was made in 1901. The two congregations would merge, and a new church would rise. This new church became Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae Vlădica”. Designed by Belgian architect Eduard Leboeuf, the building blends neo-Byzantine elements with a touch of Renaissance artistry. Its flattened hemispherical dome, a prominent feature, covers the square-shaped pronaos. Inside, the paintings, created by Eugeniu Voinescu and DR Girolamo, showcase a Renaissance style, offering a contrast to the church’s overall Byzantine influences. The church’s inauguration took place on November 7, 1904. Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Nicolae Vlădica” stands not just as a place of worship, but also as a symbol of unity and renewal, born from the legacy of its predecessors.
