Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Mare Mucenic Mercurie is located in Bucharest’s Sector 3. Its story begins with a vision and the dedication of a priest. Father Paul Lepădatu and his family spearheaded its construction. They weren’t new to this task. They had already rebuilt three other churches.
The ground was consecrated on March 25, 2003. Bishop Sebastian Ilfoveanul led the service. Father Paul Lepădatu was there ready to serve. Construction started on May 12, 2003. S.C. MARIVILA carried out the work. Mr. Marin Mândrilă was the director. Architect Florea Voicu designed the church.
By August 15, 2004 the main construction was done. The first Divine Liturgy was celebrated that day. Bishop Sebastian Ilfoveanul consecrated the church on August 22, 2004. Reverend Dinu Pompiliu served as protopope.
Most funds and materials came from Father Paul Lepădatu’s family. Various businesses and parishioners also contributed. Since August 2004 many additions have been made to Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Mare Mucenic Mercurie. A wrought iron fence surrounds the churchyard. An underfloor heating system was installed. Granite composite tiles cover the floor. Aluminum framed windows with stained glass add beauty.
A 400W sound system serves both inside and outside. Lightning protection has been installed. Copper sheeting covers the roof. Ten air conditioners keep the church comfortable. An alarm system with motion sensors and video surveillance provides security. Stone paving covers the courtyard. There are areas with grass and flowers. An oak iconostasis stands inside. All icons on the iconostasis were created. Mosaics cover 95% of the walls of Biserica Ortodoxă Sfântul Mare Mucenic Mercurie.
The church is built of concrete and exposed brick. It has six square pillars for support. The walls are 80 cm thick. The ground area is 450 square meters. The church follows a trefoil plan. It includes an open porch, a narthex, a nave, and the Holy Altar. Concrete steps covered with granite lead to the entrance. A mosaic of Saint Mercurius adorns the facade. It was created by Artgeorgies of Iași. The porch has three arches supported by four pillars. A small semi spherical vault is in the porch.
The narthex is wide. Above it is the gallery. Above the gallery are two square towers each with eight windows. A spiral staircase provides access to the gallery and towers. The narthex has two massive pillars. They extend to the pillars supporting the nave dome. Six windows illuminate the narthex.
The nave features two side apses. Each apse is covered with a semi spherical calotte. Four windows illuminate them. The dominant dome is supported by four massive pilasters. They form a Greek cross. Twelve windows surround the base of the dome. Also in the nave is part of the relics of Saint Mercurius. They are housed in a beautiful gold and silver reliquary. It was made at the State Mint in 2005. A large chandelier with 120 lights illuminates the church. It hangs from the four central pillars.
The iconostasis is carved from oak. It is divided into four registers. Mr. Gheorghe Ursu from Târgu Neamț created it. The icons on the iconostasis were painted by Sorin George Nicolae. The Holy Altar is a semicircular apse. To the right is the diaconicon. The left has the prothesis. Two arches separate them from the altar. In the center are the Holy Table and the Holy Cross. Two stained glass windows illuminate the altar. They depict the Savior and the Mother of God. The altar ceiling is arched. Above the windows it is semi spherical.
The church is covered with copper sheet. The exterior walls are insulated with 10 cm of polystyrene. People from all walks of life helped build this church. Father Paul Lepădatu’s family, Judge Ion Anghel, Marin Mândrilă, Costel Iancu, and Constantin Nedelcu.
Mosaic work began in November 2007. Patriarch Daniel gave his blessing. Virgil Moraru a church painter from ArtGeorgies Iași executed the mosaic. From 2008 to 2018 the mosaic work progressed. By January 2018 it was 95% complete. A few scenes remained to be added. These were in the diaconicon and gallery.
