Who would guess that in Bucharest’s bustling Balta Alba-Titan neighborhood stands a church born of faith and community? This is Biserica Sfantul Ioan Iacob. It is dedicated to Saint John Jacob the Hozevite. The church also honors Saint Alexander. Its story began in an unexpected way.
In 1994, the Romanian Orthodox Church approved the construction of a new church. This happened on Saint John Jacob’s feast day. However, securing the necessary permits proved challenging. Approvals from local authorities only arrived in early 1997.
Construction finally gained momentum. On October 21, 1998, the construction permit was issued. The cornerstone was laid on November 13, 1998. Octavian Radu played a pivotal role. He was a physics professor who grew up in the area. Radu became the church’s first benefactor. The Stoian family also contributed significantly. Cecilia Stefania and Sorin Ionel Stoian joined him.
The ground presented a challenge. It was weak and unstable. It used to be an unauthorized landfill. To ensure a solid foundation, 28 reinforced concrete pillars were installed. The foundation was completed in 2000.
Architect George Miclea designed the church. He drew inspiration from Bucovina’s architecture. He also added Maramures influences. These are mainly visible in the 24-meter-high spire. Skilled craftsmen from Vicovul de Sus built the church. This village is in Suceava County. The church’s structure resembles a ship. It is 23 meters long and 8.5 meters wide. Fifteen windows fill the space with light. A linden wood iconostasis adds to its beauty.
The Biserica Sfantul Ioan Iacob officially opened on June 9, 2002. Archbishop Teodosie of Tomis and Bishop Ambrozie Sinaitul consecrated it. They were surrounded by priests, deacons, and many faithful.
Currently, the church community focuses on interior frescoes. They also plan to establish a cultural and social center.
The church has a unique feature. Instead of traditional wall paintings, saints are painted on special canvases. These icons are made in the Byzantine style.
