Tucked away near Bucur Obor Market, on Calea Moșilor, stands Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul”. Locals affectionately call it Biserica Sfantul Ioan “Mosi”. This church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule, whispering tales of Bucharest’s past. Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” was built in 1807, not by wealthy patrons, but by two ordinary men. A gardener named Ioan and a baker, Ioan Jimblaru, pooled their resources, along with other believers. They erected this testament to their faith. Imagine the bustling market nearby, the scent of fresh bread mingling with the fragrance of flowers. These were the everyday sights and smells surrounding the nascent Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul”. The church we see today took shape in 1868, achieving its cross-shaped design. The first service in the remodeled church was held on March 22, 1870. Over the years, Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” has undergone several renovations. The most notable occurred in 1926. The church also faced the tremors of the 1940 earthquake. Reinforcements were added in 1942. These included reinforced concrete belts encircling the structure and a new concrete floor for the choir loft, replacing the original oak. Step inside Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” and gaze upon the Renaissance-style paintings by Romanian artist Gheorghe Tatarascu. These vibrant frescoes have been carefully cleaned and preserved multiple times throughout the years. In 1998-1999, the ceiling beneath the choir loft received its first-ever paintings. The icons on the iconostasis, echoing the Renaissance style of the murals, some adorned with silver, further enrich the interior. Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul” also houses a parish library. It boasts a collection of antique books, some over two centuries old. Within these pages, stories echo from a time long past. One particularly compelling story connects Biserica Sfantul Ioan “Mosi” to the 1848 revolution in Wallachia. It is said the signal for the uprising was given by the ringing of the church bells. Between 2008 and 2010, a chapel was added and the church received various liturgical objects. These include gilded crosses, a censer, and icons of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the church’s patron saints. So next time you’re near Bucur Obor, take a moment to visit Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul”. It stands as a quiet testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
