A whisper of fire. That’s what the Old St George Church in Bucharest remembers. It’s a story etched in its very stones. This church has seen centuries unfold. It has endured destruction and rebirth. It stands as a testament to faith’s resilience.

The Old St George Church. More than just a place of worship. It’s a living history book. Founded in 1492. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. Its foundations bear witness to a monastery established centuries ago. This place served as the seat of the Metropolis of Ungro-Wallachia. This was between 1545 and 1575. Imagine the power and influence that once resided here.

But its history isn’t without tragedy. Ottoman forces destroyed the initial complex in 1595. Following the Battle of Călugăreni. The 1621 records speak of an imposing bell tower. It probably survived until the Great Fire of 1847. The church itself burned in 1718. It was rebuilt in 1724. Earthquakes in 1802 and 1838 caused serious damage. Then came the devastating 1847 fire. A total loss.

Yet from the ashes rose a testament to the unwavering spirit of the parishioners. They quickly rebuilt their beloved church. It reopened in 1849. Unfortunately this structure proved weak. It was demolished in 1875. The current church. Completed in 1881. It’s a result of the community’s dedication. Calinic Miclescu consecrated this rebuilt church the same year. Gheorghe Pompilian executed the beautiful paintings. His work was inspired by the renowned Gheorghe Tattarescu.

The iconostasis. Carved from sycamore. Its Ukrainian Baroque style mirrors the church itself. The interior uses linden wood. While the massive entrance door is sturdy oak. The church has undergone renovations. Following the 1940 earthquake. And again in 1964 and the 1980s and 1990s.

Stand here now and imagine the stories within these walls. The cross-shaped structure. 32 x 16.9 meters. The Christ Pantocrator dome rises 24 meters high. The narthex. Typically large for the 19th century. An original crypt lies under the altar. The walls. 90-100 centimeters thick. The foundation. A blend of cement and brick. The stained-glass windows. The exterior’s simplicity. Decorated with pilasters and neo-Corinthian capitals. A Greek Revival pediment crowns the portico. The domes. Ukrainian Baroque adapted to Romanian taste.

The Old St. George Church isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant symbol of faith. Resilience and enduring community spirit. A place where history and faith intertwine. A must-see for anyone visiting Bucharest.
