“A symphony in brick and mortar,” whispered an elderly woman beside me, her gaze fixed upon Biserica Ortodoxa Sfântul Gheorghe Grivița. Her words echoed my own unspoken awe. Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe Grivița stands as a testament to resilience and faith, a beacon in Bucharest’s bustling landscape. Built between 1926 and 1931 by the CFR Workers’ Fund, the church was designed by architect C. Pomponiu. Its original construction was overseen by the then-parish priest, St. C. Marinescu. Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe Grivița, with its distinctive triconic shape and soaring polygonal tower, quickly became a beloved landmark. But its story, much like the city itself, is one of both triumph and tribulation. The devastating earthquake of 1940 and the bombings of 1944 inflicted severe damage on the structure. For years, services were held solely in the narthex, a poignant reminder of the scars of war. Repairs began in 1949, a slow and painstaking process that stretched over two decades, culminating in 1972. The restoration, spearheaded by architect George Văsii and sub-engineer Nae Ștefan, was a testament to the dedication of the community. They meticulously restored the church to its former glory, preserving its unique style and architectural details. Between 1972 and 1976, the vibrant frescoes by Gh. Răducanu were painstakingly restored, breathing new life into the church’s interior. Tragically, the 1977 earthquake dealt another blow, necessitating further extensive repairs, particularly to the smaller towers. Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe Grivița persevered. Under the leadership of Father Dumitru Găină, appointed in 1992, a wave of renovations and enhancements swept through the church. The entire edifice, inside and out, was revitalized. The towers and roof gleamed with fresh paint. A heating system was installed in 1996, offering comfort to the faithful. The cemetery chapel was lovingly renovated in 1998. A trapezoidal hall was added to the basement in 2000. Finally, in 2006, a gleaming copper roof crowned the structure, a symbol of enduring hope. Today, Biserica Sfântul Gheorghe Grivița stands proud, its story etched in every brick and brushstroke. It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of faith and the resilience of a community determined to preserve its heritage.
