Nestled beside Lake Baneasa, the Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfantul Cuvios Antonie cel Mare – Măicăneasa” whispers tales of resilience and faith. The name “Măicăneasa” itself echoes the village of Maicanesti, which graced this very spot over six centuries ago. Imagine, we’re standing where villagers once lived, worked, and prayed. Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfantul Cuvios Antonie cel Mare – Măicăneasa” began its modern journey much later. In 1951, a small chapel dedicated to the Descent of the Holy Spirit was established on Apicultori Boulevard. This humble beginning marked the birth of the Maicaneasa Parish. The dream of a larger church took root. In 1994, the local authorities granted the parish a five-thousand-square-meter plot on Ionescu Sisesti Street, adjacent to the existing chapel. On July 31, 1994, Bishop Teodosie Snagoveanul consecrated the ground for Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfantul Cuvios Antonie cel Mare – Măicăneasa”, dedicating it to Saint Anthony the Great. Architect Marioara Miclea and engineer Pavelescu I. crafted the blueprints, and construction permits were secured in 1997. However, it wasn’t until 2001, with the arrival of Father Lup Mihai, that the foundation stones were laid. Construction, fueled by parishioners’ contributions and Father Mihai’s unwavering dedication, commenced on March 20, 2001. The church’s basement was completed first. Progress continued through the winter of 2002, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Paul Petre Tardea, reaching the height of the church towers. Sadly, a lack of funds forced a pause in 2004. The story of Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfantul Cuvios Antonie cel Mare – Măicăneasa” doesn’t end there. In 2005, with renewed support from the local authorities, construction resumed, culminating in the church’s completion in 2009. The church stands in the shape of a cross, adorned with three majestic towers. Its reinforced concrete frame is clad in brick, both inside and out, resting upon a full basement. In 2008, a lightning rod was installed atop the main tower, followed by a new heating system in 2009. Inside, the carved oak iconostasis, brought from Neamt County, stands as a testament to artistry and faith. A magnificent 200-arm chandelier illuminates the sacred space. Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfantul Cuvios Antonie cel Mare – Măicăneasa” is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of community spirit, a beacon of faith, and a living testament to the enduring legacy of Saint Anthony the Great.
