Could a pile of garbage inspire a holy place? Here, before the Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfânta Vineri – Berceni”, it’s hard to imagine the scene that unfolded in 2003. Back then, this very spot was a wasteland of trash and debris. Yet, amidst this desolation, a vision took root. Priest Gabriel Cate, driven by a profound desire to become a church founder, like his father before him, saw potential in this neglected land. He began the first measurements for Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfânta Vineri – Berceni”, his dream church. Securing 1,600 square meters from Bucharest’s City Council was a significant victory. With support from the Filden Group, which provided technical assistance and building materials, the church rapidly rose from the refuse. By September 2006, Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfânta Vineri – Berceni” stood ready for its consecration. The consecration ceremony on September 17, 2006, was a momentous occasion. Crowds of faithful gathered, alongside Bishop Sebastian Ilfoveanul and a host of priests, to witness Father Cate’s dream realized. The design of Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfânta Vineri – Berceni” echoes the architecture of Cozia Monastery, a historical landmark founded by Prince Mircea the Elder. Its interior and exterior boast stunning neo-Byzantine style paintings. Father Cate’s generosity extended beyond the church’s construction. He personally donated the iconostasis, the imperial icons, and the altar furnishings. The courtyard, paved with decorative stones and adorned with greenery, provides a tranquil setting. The candleholder area, chapel, chancery, and storage room, all decorated with icons and paintings, enhance the prayerful atmosphere of Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfânta Vineri – Berceni”. In 2007, a sacred relic arrived: the Vestment of Saint Parascheva, patron saint of the church, a gift from the Metropolis of Moldavia and Bukovina. Today, Biserica Ortodoxă „Sfânta Vineri – Berceni” continues its pastoral and missionary work. Father Cate, the driving force behind this transformation, now focuses on building spiritual churches within the hearts of his parishioners. He guides them on their individual paths towards eternal life, a testament to the power of faith and perseverance.
