Did a simple priest named Nan truly shape the destiny of this neighborhood? Here, before the Biserica Ortodoxă „Popa Nan”, the echoes of his legacy resonate. This church, dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helena, stands as a testament to his enduring influence. The very street we stand on bears his name. The first church on this site, a modest, single-domed structure, arose in 1719 thanks to Popa Nan’s efforts and the generosity of his parishioners. He had been sent by the Romanian Metropolitan Church to establish a new parish in northeast Bucharest, a mission he clearly embraced. Imagine this area then, a developing corner of the city, finding its spiritual center in this small church. The original building, however, met an unfortunate end. Despite repairs over the years in 1802, 1845, 1860, and 1886, the structure crumbled and finally collapsed one night in July 1910. The Biserica Ortodoxă „Popa Nan” we see today rose from those ruins between 1910 and 1918, designed by architect Cristofi Cerchez. Picture the vibrant frescoes that adorned the interior, painted between 1918 and 1920. Tragically, they were largely destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1977, which also caused the nave dome to collapse. The church underwent extensive repairs until 1986, and the interior was repainted, incorporating the Romanian tricolor into the new artwork. This resurrected Biserica Ortodoxă „Popa Nan” was rededicated in October 1989 by Patriarch Teoctist. Look closely at the architecture. The church boasts a cross-shaped design, with polygonal apses, a vaulted narthex, and two domes: a twelve-sided dome over the nave and an octagonal bell tower atop the narthex. The facade, painted in pristine white, features a subtly profiled pediment and a series of elongated windows. Popa Nan’s legacy continues to inspire, his name forever etched in the heart of Bucharest.
