Time stands still within these aged walls. Welcome to the Biserica Ortodoxă Crețulescu. This isn’t just a church. It’s a living testament to Bucharest’s rich history. Built between 1720 and 1722 it stands as a symbol of faith and resilience.

Boyar Iordache Crețulescu and his wife Safta commissioned this magnificent structure. Safta was the daughter of Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu a pivotal figure in Wallachian history. The Brâncovenesc style is evident in the architecture. Note the elegant lines and the subtle detailing.

Originally the exterior was painted a vibrant spectacle of color. Imagine the frescoes covering every surface a kaleidoscope of religious scenes and intricate patterns. However the 1935-1936 renovations stripped away the paint revealing the beautiful red brick underneath. The porch however still holds those original frescoes a glimpse into the past.

Inside Gheorghe Tattarescu’s breathtaking frescoes from 1859-1860 adorn the walls. His work brings biblical narratives to life. The vibrant colors and exquisite detail are truly awe-inspiring.

The Biserica Ortodoxă Crețulescu has faced adversity. The 1940 Vrancea earthquake damaged the structure. It was repaired in 1942-1943. Then during the early communist regime it was slated for demolition. However thanks to the courageous efforts of architects like Henriette Delavrancea-Gibory it was saved. Further renovations followed the 1977 Bucharest earthquake and the 1989 Revolution.

Today a memorial bust of Corneliu Coposu stands beside the church. He was a prominent liberal politician who spent time imprisoned by the communist regime. His presence here serves as a poignant reminder of Romania’s struggles and triumphs.

This modest church near the Royal Palace is more than just stones and mortar. It embodies centuries of Romanian history. It’s a story of faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of a nation. Look closely and you’ll see the echoes of the past whispering through the ages. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and the history that surrounds you within the hallowed walls of the Biserica Ortodoxă Crețulescu.
