Biserica Ortodoxă „Buna Vestire – Bellu”

Has anyone ever wondered how a church rises from a simple idea to a grand structure? The Biserica Ortodoxă “Buna Vestire – Bellu” in Bucharest is a testament to such a journey. Its story begins not with towering walls, but with the vision of a community. In the early 20th century, the population of the Bellu district grew, and with it, the need for a dedicated place of worship. Before the grandeur of the Biserica Ortodoxă “Buna Vestire – Bellu” that we see today, a modest chapel stood at Sos. Giurgiului nr. 23. This chapel, built in 1911, served as a temporary spiritual home for the burgeoning community. The land for the chapel was generously donated by Anastasie Trandafirescu. This initial act of generosity set the stage for the larger endeavor to come. The dream of a larger church was realized thanks to a significant donation by Petru Mihail, a Romanian merchant of Albanian origin. He had fought in the Romanian War of Independence and, upon his passing, left a substantial sum for the construction of a church in Bucharest. This legacy was carried forward by his nephew, Theodor Athanasiu. Biserica Ortodoxă “Buna Vestire – Bellu” was designed by architect Ioanid D. Vulcan and built under the supervision of engineer Ignat N. Mateescu. Construction officially began on June 29, 1925, after the land was consecrated two months earlier on April 29, 1925. The location, on Sos. Giurgiului, was part of a land donation by Bishop Nifon of the Lower Danube. The church we admire now was consecrated on June 29, 1934, nine years after the laying of the foundation stone. The church bears the name “Buna Vestire” (Annunciation) and also honors Saints Peter and Paul. The unique interior of Biserica Ortodoxă “Buna Vestire – Bellu” features stunning woodwork crafted from solid oak. Sculptor Anghel Dima created the furnishings, including the bishop’s throne, choir stalls, imperial candlesticks, iconostasis, and paneling. The church’s initial interior painting was done by Anastasie Damian, but was later completely redone in fresco by Eugen Profeta between 1969 and 1971. His brother, Eremia Profeta, completed the finishing touches. The Biserica Ortodoxă “Buna Vestire – Bellu” stands as a symbol of community effort, generous donations, and artistic skill.
