How about discovering a haven of faith amid the bustling Titan neighborhood? I’m talking about Biserica Ortodoxă Acoperământul Maicii Domnului. This church serves as a spiritual anchor for many. It all began with humble origins.
The story of Biserica Ortodoxă Acoperământul Maicii Domnului starts in 2001. The Romanian Patriarch Teoctist gave his blessing. Father Mihai Stavara was entrusted with securing land and necessary documents. The city and Sector 3 authorities granted land near Policlinica Titan. This act of generosity paved the way for a new parish.
Initially, services were held in military tents. These tents were provided by the Ministry of National Defense. Imagine a makeshift church made of canvas. This temporary arrangement served the community. The “Cortul nostru de rugaciune” faced Nicolae Grigorescu Boulevard. It stood to the Policlinica Titan’s left.
Construction of the actual Biserica Ortodoxă Acoperământul Maicii Domnului began on May 21, 2002. Patriarch Teoctist visited on August 29, 2002. He laid the cornerstone with Bishops Teodosie and Sebastian. Locals led by Father Stavara and Mayor Eugen Pleșca welcomed them. They celebrated the foundation of the church dedicated to Acoperamantul Maicii Domnului and Saints Cosma and Damian.
Parishioners contributed prayers and donations to erect the Biserica Ortodoxă Acoperământul Maicii Domnului. By March 10, 2006, services moved into the new building. The army needed the tents back. The church was roofed but unfinished. Despite missing elements services continued with hope.
Over time, the church acquired essential features. A carved oak iconostasis crafted by Mircea Marian arrived. Art Georgies from Iași added glass icons modeled after the Patriarchal Cathedral. Holy crosses were placed atop the roof. These crosses marked the Orthodox presence.
Horia-Traian Petrescu began painting the church in 2007 using the “al secco” technique. His son Dinu Petrescu continued this work in 2010. The church structure took the form of a cross. It has interior support from two rows of five pillars each. Dimensions include a length of 38 meters and a width of 18 meters. The height reaches 28 meters. The Biserica Ortodoxă Acoperământul Maicii Domnului accommodates many. Its space covers about 500 square meters. Classic materials were used in construction. These included reinforced concrete, metal framework and ceramic blocks.
The Biserica Ortodoxă Acoperământul Maicii Domnului supports the community. It offers warm meals and food packages to families. Cultural activities include weekly catechism and partnerships with local schools. The church organizes painting exhibitions and trips for children. They support the “Casa Noastra” residential center with supplies for 17 children. Annually the church celebrates its dedication.
The Biserica Ortodoxă Acoperământul Maicii Domnului stands as a testament. It reflects faith community and artistic dedication. As you continue your journey remember its story. Remember its journey from tents to a house of worship.
