Let’s step back to the late 1990s. Father Vasile-Adrian Mărginean took on a new role. He became the chaplain general of Romanian penitentiaries. He started building a new church in his hometown. He vowed to continue this work in Bucharest.
In 1999 Father Vasile-Adrian was appointed to Parohia Sfântul Calinic-Titan. He sought land for a new church. Finally in 2003 a suitable plot was found. Patriarch Teoctist granted permission to build.
In 2004 the local council approved the construction. The Municipality of Bucharest allocated land. The land was designated for a church and children’s center. After some initial hurdles, the land was officially handed over in 2005.
Architect Aurelian Mareș designed the Biserica Nașterea Domnului. Construction began with the bell tower. Technical issues arose. The plans were revised to include a basement. In 2007 a small church opened in the basement of the bell tower. Services were held there and outdoors. By the end of 2007 the bell tower was complete. A proper church space was created.
The Biserica Nașterea Domnului became its own parish in 2008. Father Mărginean was appointed as its first paroh. Work continued on the bell tower. Heating was installed. Plans for the main church building progressed.
Professor Ion Basgan became the parish’s first epitrop. He was the vice president of the Academy of Scientists in Romania.
Today the Biserica Nașterea Domnului stands as a symbol of devotion. Its story began with a dream. The church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Lord. This is celebrated on December 25th. It also honors Saint Sebastian on December 18th.
