Orthodox and Greek-Catholic Christians celebrate the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple every year on November 21. This day marks the beginning of the Christmas Lent. It is a day when eating fish is allowed.
The story of the Theotokos childhood is not in the four Gospels. The unwritten tradition of the Church preserves it. Some apocryphal gospels also tell the story. These books may contain correct information. However, they often mix it with legends. The holiday honors when the Virgin Mary was brought to the Temple at age three.
Some Jewish families would leave their daughters at the Temple. This was for richer families. Others simply wanted to give their daughters a better education. The priests, law teachers and widows cared for these girls. Usually, these were widows of deceased priests. It was like temporary monastic life. The girls usually married after their apprenticeship.
We honor the Virgin Mary because she prepared herself. She put her personality at God’s disposal. This allowed her to conceive and give birth to God’s Son. Because of her, God saved the world through his Son. The Council of Ephesus defined Mary as “Theotokos” in 431 AD. This means “God-bearer”. The church established special feasts to honor her. The church year starts with the birth of the Lord on September 8. We celebrate her entry into the Temple on November 21. The Dormition of the Theotokos is on August 15. It marks her passage to heaven with body and soul.

The liturgical calendar is a journey through human salvation by Jesus Christ. It affirms Christian Europe. This is our transcendent reality from temporal to atemporal. We live between earth and heaven. Heaven is the end of our journey.
