Built in 1746 Biserica Foișor stands proudly. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. This church has weathered centuries of Bucharest’s history. Its very name whispers a story. Foișor means ‘small turret’. This refers to a lookout tower. The tower was part of a princely palace. The palace once belonged to Doamna Smaranda. She was the wife of Nicolae Mavrocordat. Doamna Smaranda commissioned the church’s construction. She dedicated it to the Nativity of Mary.

Biserica Foișor wasn’t just a place of worship. It was the heart of a community. It sat amidst gardens and homes. These belonged to farmers who had migrated from south of the Danube River. Over time Biserica Foișor gained a second patron saint. This is Saint Trifon. He’s the protector of fields and gardens. The church’s connection to its surroundings shaped its identity. The grounds around the church once held the remains of the princely palace. Archaeologists uncovered the palace foundations. This was during excavations in 1963 and 1964. The area around the church is now very different. Modern apartment buildings replaced the historic gardens.

The church itself is remarkable. It’s built of thin bricks lime and sand. This construction is durable and incredibly resistant. The walls are exceptionally thick. Inside the church two massive stone pillars support the dome. The original iconostasis was made of brick. The windows were small. They were designed in the style common to that era. The church’s architecture is a blend of Byzantine and Brâncovenesc styles. It had an open portico. This portico served as a school for many years. The original oak door was carved with an axe. Iron bands and nails secured it. Skilled blacksmiths crafted its lock and hinges. The church is shaped like a cross. Its original frescoes are still visible. They’re covered with a layer of limestone and later oil paintings. The church boasts two towers. The front tower functioned as a bell tower until the 1900s. Each tower top features an ornate iron cross.

A wooden bridge once connected the palace. This bridge linked it to Văcărești Monastery. The bridge stretched over the Dâmbovița River. The river valley was swampy. The bridge spanned a distance of about two and a half kilometers. Locals recall this bridge from stories passed down through generations. The church has undergone several renovations. In 1889 the windows were enlarged. The portico was enclosed. The church also received a new ambon. The older frescoes were painted over. The church received a new lead roof in 1914-1915. A new vestry and storage area were added. During the 1980s the neighborhood underwent significant changes. An architect cleverly excluded Biserica Foișor from demolition plans. This was during the communist era. This saved the church from destruction.

Biserica Foișor has endured earthquakes and regime changes. It has remained a beacon of faith for almost three centuries. It continues to be a vibrant center for the community. This church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the unwavering spirit of Bucharest. It’s a story etched in stone. It’s a story that continues to unfold.
