Hidden amongst the trees stands Biserica Andronache. Its quiet dignity belies a rich history. This beautiful church wasn’t always a place of quiet prayer.
Biserica Andronache is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith and community. Built on the land of Gheorghe Niculescu-Andronache its namesake the church’s construction began in 1890. It was finally completed in 1900. The first homes in the Andronache neighborhood sprang up around it. Imagine the bustling energy of the new community growing up around this landmark.
The church’s story isn’t solely about bricks and mortar. It’s a story of devotion and family. Alexandra Gh Ioanin and her sister Elena Vladoianu poured their hearts and resources into its creation. It fulfilled their parents Eufrosina and Gheorghe Niculescu-Andronache’s fervent wish. The resulting building is a masterpiece of eclectic neobyzantine and neoromantic styles. Its imposing presence dominates the neighborhood.
The beauty of Biserica Andronache isn’t just in its architecture. Note the intricate details. Notice the sculpted stone and brickwork. These evoke the Brancovenesc style. The interior is equally breathtaking. The paintings are in the neoclassical style. They were executed in oil by the Italian artist Oreste Cantini. He completed them in 1906. The iconostasis and icons are also works of art. They were recently restored to their former glory. The entire project took years. It involved meticulous work by skilled artisans.
The church also boasts a magnificent baldachin supported by four pillars. Look up at the painted Saint Nicholas. He is surrounded by two doves ascending to a starry sky. Above the pisania the mosaic icons of Saint George and the Apostles Peter and Paul are stunning works. This is the work of artist Ion Vasu. The church’s impressive size is also noteworthy. It covers 200 square meters. It stands tall at 20 meters high.
The grounds surrounding Biserica Andronache are just as significant as the building itself. The expansive courtyard provides a peaceful setting for reflection. Ancient linden trees and oaks stand guard. They offer a picturesque backdrop to this sacred space. The graves of the founding benefactors are located here. They rest peacefully under a black marble cross from Sweden. The area is surrounded by beautifully crafted wrought iron railings. It is a testament to the enduring faith of those who built and continue to cherish this church.
In 2024 Biserica Andronache received a precious gift. A fragment of Saint George’s relics arrived from Veria Greece. It now resides within a silver reliquary. This was made in the workshops of the Romanian Patriarchate. The church was also rededicated that year receiving a second patron saint The Birth of the Virgin Mary.
