Hidden behind the bustling streets of Bucharest stands the Biserica Albă. Its whitewashed walls gleam under the Romanian sun. This isn’t just any church. This is a place steeped in history. A place where centuries whisper secrets.

The Biserica Albă dedicated to Saint Nicholas boasts an intriguing past. Its origins remain somewhat murky. It likely existed in the late 17th century. Some believe it was founded on the Văcărescu family estate. However the priest Neagu Dărvaș and Jupâneasa Vișa are considered more likely founders. The name Biserica Albă or White Church didn’t appear until around 1800. Before then it was known by the names of its founders. A wooden icon of Saint Nicholas dating back to 1701-1702 confirms its early existence.

Throughout the 20th century the Biserica Albă underwent numerous restorations. These happened in 1909 1914 1941 1945 1964 1977 1988 and 2012-2014. The church suffered damage from earthquakes particularly the 1802 and 1838 tremors. These led to significant rebuilding in 1827 under the supervision of the high Clucer Nicolae Trăsnea. He added a second dedication to the Prophet Elijah.

The stunning interior frescoes were painted in 1873 by the renowned artist Gheorghe Tattarescu. He used oil paint and included floral and geometric ornaments. These have been modified over the years due to the many restorations. Artists like Costin Petrescu Constantin Șelaru and teams of restorers have worked on the frescoes throughout the 20th century. The most recent restoration of the murals was completed in 2013-2014.

The iconostasis a true masterpiece of Brâncovenesc style wood carving is another highlight. It is made of linden wood. It showcases impressive floral ornamentation. All the icons on the iconostasis are the work of Gheorghe Tattarescu. The iconostasis itself dates back to the second half of the 18th century. It was originally in a metochion of the Râmnicu Vâlcea episcopate. It ended up at the Biserica Albă in the first half of the 19th century. It was restored in 2014-2016 by IORUX TRADE SRL under Sultana Polizu.

Gheorghe Crutzescu a notable observer once described the Biserica Albă. He said “the White Church is not beautiful but it surprises with its immaculate white”. This rural church in the heart of a large city indeed holds a unique charm. It stands as a testament to Bucharest’s rich past. Its history resilience and beauty make it a captivating sight.
