Journey with me back to 1988. Imagine the excitement as India’s then-President, R. Venkataraman, inaugurates the Birla Planetarium in Chennai. This wasn’t just any planetarium. It was the fifth Birla Planetarium in India, a testament to the Birla Foundation’s commitment to science education. The Birla Planetarium, nestled within the Periyar Science and Technology Centre, quickly became a beacon for astronomy enthusiasts. Inside the iconic aluminum dome of the Birla Planetarium, the GOTO GM II starfield projector whirred to life, casting a spellbinding panorama of the cosmos. This wasn’t a mere slideshow. The projector simulated diurnal, annual, latitudinal, and even precessional motions, providing an unprecedentedly accurate depiction of the night sky. As the years passed, the Birla Planetarium didn’t rest on its laurels. In 2009, it broke new ground again, becoming India’s first 360-degree sky theatre. Using cutting-edge DLP projection and Wrap software, it offered fully immersive shows, warping images seamlessly onto the dome. Now, fast forward to more recent times. Imagine stepping into the Birla Planetarium after its extensive renovation. The old mechanical projector, affectionately nicknamed “The Resting Giant,” now stands as an exhibit, a tribute to its decades of service. Its replacement? A state-of-the-art hybrid projector, capable of displaying everything from the sun and moon to constellations, planets, and their moons with breathtaking clarity. The Birla Planetarium also houses the innovative “Science on a Sphere”, developed by NOAA. This sphere allows visitors to view dynamic representations of Earth’s systems, from climate change to ocean temperatures. Outside the main theatre, in the hall of fame, portraits of scientific luminaries like Neil Armstrong, Sunita Williams, and Kalpana Chawla inspire future generations. The Birla Planetarium isn’t just a place to watch a show. It’s a place to learn, explore, and connect with the wonders of the universe.
