Have you ever wondered about a neighborhood named after birds? Right here in San Diego lies Birdland. It’s nestled between State Route 163, Interstate 805, and Mission Valley. Birdland earned its unique name from the streets named after various bird species. You’ll find streets like Talon Way, Bobolink Way, Meadow Lark Drive, and Cardinal Drive. Even short cul-de-sacs bear avian-inspired names like Kiwi Street, Sea Gull Court, and Blue Jay Place. Birdland is often confused with Bird Rock in La Jolla or a section of Mission Hills. Both also have bird-themed street names. However, Birdland is distinct. It’s officially part of San Diego’s Serra Mesa Planning Area. Birdland developed mainly in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was initially known as “El Dorado.” The neighborhood consists primarily of single-family homes. It also includes three large apartment communities. Birdland stands out for its prominent medical facilities. These include Donald N. Sharp Memorial Hospital, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns, and Rady Children’s Hospital. You’ll also find Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion, Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego here. Birdland even houses the San Diego Juvenile Hall. Education in Birdland is served by the San Diego Unified School District. Fletcher Elementary School is the sole school within the neighborhood. Older students typically attend Montgomery Middle School and Kearny High School in nearby Linda Vista. Interestingly, the school district’s supply center is also located in Birdland.
