Beneath the waves, a world of wonder awaits. Here at the Birch Aquarium, perched on a hilltop in La Jolla overlooking the Pacific, the mysteries of the ocean come to life. Birch Aquarium isn’t just a collection of tanks; it’s the public face of the renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography. For over a century, Scripps scientists have explored the depths, and the Birch Aquarium shares their discoveries with the world.

The Birch Aquarium’s story begins in 1903 with the Marine Biological Association of San Diego, later renamed Scripps Institution of Oceanography. A small public aquarium and museum was established to showcase their research. The original aquarium, a modest wooden structure built in 1915, housed just 19 tanks. It was replaced in 1951 by the Thomas Wayland Vaughan Aquarium, a three-story marvel with a ring of 18 tanks. The current Birch Aquarium, opened in 1992 thanks to a generous donation from the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation, is a state-of-the-art facility.

Step inside the Hall of Fishes, and you’ll embark on a journey along the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. You’ll encounter vibrant garibaldi, California’s state marine fish, and the intelligent Giant Pacific Octopus, regularly engaged in enrichment activities. Marvel at the two-story Giant Kelp Forest tank, a 70,000-gallon spectacle teeming with life, including leopard sharks and the endangered giant sea bass. Divers feed the fish several times a week, offering a unique viewing experience. Don’t miss the rescued loggerhead sea turtle, a permanent resident after being injured in New Jersey.

Venture outside to Tide Pool Plaza, where interactive tide pools allow you to touch sea stars, hermit crabs, and other local creatures. The plaza offers breathtaking views of La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean. You can even spot Scripps Pier, the research pier used by the institution. Nearby, the Shark Shores exhibit showcases leopard sharks, rays, and other Southern California natives.

Discover the magical world of seadragons and seahorses in their dedicated exhibit, one of the largest seadragon habitats in the world. Birch Aquarium is a leader in seahorse propagation, helping reduce the need for wild collection. The Beyster Family Little Blue Penguins exhibit is another must-see, featuring the world’s smallest penguins in a habitat designed to mimic their native Australian and New Zealand coastlines.

The Birch Aquarium is more than just an aquarium; it’s a portal to the ocean’s depths, a testament to scientific discovery, and a call to action for ocean conservation. Leave inspired by the wonders you’ve witnessed and empowered to protect our blue planet.
