In 1993, a pioneering scientist named Stefan H. E. Kaufmann arrived in Berlin. He embarked on a mission that would intertwine with the city’s rich medical history. His task was to lead the newly founded Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, later housed in the Biophysikgebäude. The Biophysikgebäude stands on the historic Charité campus. This campus, steeped in centuries of medical innovation, offered a fitting backdrop for the institute’s ambitious goals. The Charité itself, established in 1710 as a plague quarantine station, had witnessed groundbreaking discoveries in infection research by figures like Rudolf Virchow and Robert Koch. The Biophysikgebäude, completed in 2000, became a hub for cutting-edge research. Kaufmann, along with fellow director Thomas F. Meyer, began their work even before the building was finished, conducting experiments in temporary labs across the city. The Biophysikgebäude’s construction presented unique challenges. The site’s proximity to the Spree River and Berlin’s sandy soil necessitated a complex foundation with 32-meter-deep concrete columns. The design also had to harmonize with the campus’s historic architecture. Within the Biophysikgebäude, Kaufmann focused his Immunology Department on combating tuberculosis. Meyer’s Molecular Biology Department explored the links between bacterial pathogens and cancer. Later, Arturo Zychlinsky joined the institute, establishing the Department of Cellular Microbiology. His research delved into the immune functions of DNA and a defense mechanism known as “Neutrophil Extracellular Traps.” The Biophysikgebäude has also hosted renowned scientists like Emmanuelle Charpentier, co-developer of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene scissors. Over the years, numerous research groups have contributed to the institute’s diverse research portfolio, from vector biology and malaria to microbiology and epidemiology. The Biophysikgebäude stands not just as a modern research facility but as a testament to Berlin’s enduring legacy in medical science, continuing the tradition of innovation established centuries ago on the Charité campus.
