What if I told you that this building right here is more than just brick and mortar? Welcome to the Biomedical Technology Center. It is a hub of innovation and a beacon of hope in Detroit.

The Biomedical Technology Center is part of Wayne State University’s Integrative Biosciences Initiative. This initiative tackles biomedical challenges. It focuses on research, discovery, education, and training. The goal is to apply knowledge to improve health in urban environments.

The center itself spans 200000 square feet. It is located at 6135 Woodward Avenue. Here, multidisciplinary research teams work together. They address health issues caused by urban stressors.

Think of scientists collaborating. They develop new ways to study chemical and biological systems. Imagine researchers working to understand environmental factors affecting male fertility. The Biomedical Technology Center is at the forefront of such studies.

The center’s work extends beyond the lab. Wayne State University faculty are leaders in their fields. For example, one faculty member is the president of the International Association for Great Lakes Research board. The university also maintains high standards for lab animal care. The AAALAC has commended and renewed their accreditation.

Here at the Biomedical Technology Center, researchers are developing new technologies. Wayne State received a 2.6 million dollar NIH grant. This grant supports the development of a new filtration platform for insulin administration.

But that’s not the only biomedical research happening in Detroit. Not far from here, Michigan State University is constructing a new biomedical research center. This seven-story facility represents a 335 million dollar investment. It is part of a larger “Future of Health” development. This includes a new hospital tower and residential buildings.

MSU’s new research center will be their largest to date. It will house over 80 research teams. The Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute will also have a dedicated space here. This institute will focus solely on neurofibromatosis research.

Back here at the Biomedical Technology Center, labs are buzzing with activity. Researchers in the Biomaterials Lab are designing therapies for neural tissue injuries. They create materials that promote neuron growth across injury sites. In the Biomedical Optics and Instrumentation Lab, scientists are quantifying the mechanical properties of matter using light.

The Injury Biomechanics Research and Testing Facilities are also housed here. These labs are used for automotive component testing and military vehicle research. They also develop anthropometric test devices. Researchers in the Rehab Robotics and Biomechanics Lab are developing robots. These robots help restore neuromuscular function. The Vascular Regeneration and Mechanics Lab is engineering blood vessels. They aim to create grafts for surgery and models for disease study.

The Biomedical Technology Center is more than just a building. It is a place where dedicated researchers work to improve lives. It addresses critical health challenges. This center embodies the spirit of innovation. It is a source of hope for Detroit and beyond.
